The Austro-Hungarian Artillery Arsenal

The Austro-Hungarian Artillery Arsenal was designed by Vincenz Freiherr von Augustin, Director General of Artillery. The buildings were designed by notable architects of the time such as Carl Roesner, Antonius Pius de Riegel, August Sicard von Sicardsburg, Eduard van der Nüll, Theophil von Hansen and Ludwig Förster.

Architectural style

The Arsenal features Italian-medieval and Byzantine-Islamic elements and is considered the most significant secular building complex in the style of romantic historicism in Vienna. The Arsenal was extended and modernised several times in its chequered history to suit the needs of the time.

From the past …

The Vienna Arsenal was first built in the 19th century and was one of the major military institutions of Vienna. It contained an arsenal, a factory, and a training facility for the imperial army.

… to the present

Many of the historical buildings of the Arsenal are now used for housing. In addition, various organisations and cultural institutions are located in the complex.

Here’s where I want to live

Its residents enjoy the spaciousness of the historical grounds.

Originally, the sprawling design of the military complex had strategic reasons. Today, residents are free to use the open spaces for recreational purposes. The Vienna Arsenal is a green oasis in the heart of the city with ample space for all kinds of activities.

The people

Patrizia Vrabel-Cirillo

The Arsenal offers me, a self-employed mother of three, a high quality of life thanks to the compatibility of work and family. The restaurant I run is here in the Arsenal, where I also live. I’m friends with many of my neighbours and I love the Arsenal’s community life.

Thomas Daubek

The lofty ceilings and the historical ambience of my flat in the Vienna Arsenal have an incredible flair. And there is plenty of space for me to design my living space the way I like it – all nestled in a green oasis in the heart of Vienna.

Elisabeth Hannak

I cannot imagine living anywhere else but here. My rooftop flat has a terrace from which I have a panoramic view of the city and the Arsenal grounds with its stately architecture. I get to see the change of seasons up close, and I love being able to step right into nature when I leave the house with my dog.

Otto Vanura

As a civil engineer I was deeply involved in the reconstruction of the Vienna Arsenal after World War II, and I have been living in the new build part of the Arsenal for around 60 years. I sometimes see deer, foxes and hares from my balcony. My children grew up here and even at 97, I feel like the Arsenal offers a high quality of live.

Anna Maurer

As a freelance makeup artist I travel a lot because I often work on location for film projects, photoshoots or events. Therefore it’s all the more lovely to come home after work and enjoy the calm atmosphere of the Arsenal. I love taking walks on the Arsenal grounds. The park is like an extension of my living room.

Lothar Bauer

I live in the historical part of the Vienna Arsenal and I enjoy the tranquillity of this green oasis. I cross the park on foot to get to my office in Objekt 1, where as managing director of Bauer Bau Consulting GmbH I am responsible for all rebuilds and renovations in the Vienna Arsenal. What I love about my work is the challenge of transforming the old building structure which is so steeped in history into a build that’s fit for modern use.
